What is Collagen? Why you might want to take Collagen Supplements?

What is collagen?

Collagen is a protein that is found in the connective tissues of the body, such as the skin, bones, and tendons. It is the most abundant protein in the human body, making up approximately 75% of the body’s skin, muscles, and connective tissues. It plays a crucial role in supporting the structure and function of the tissues.

What are the main types of collagen?

There are several different types of collagen, each of which is found in different parts of the body and has unique properties and functions. The main types of collagen include:

Type I collagen is the most common type and is found in the skin, tendons, and bones. It provides strength and support to these tissues.

Type II collagen is found in the cartilage and helps to cushion and lubricate the joints.

Type III collagen is found in the skin, muscles, and blood vessels and helps to support their structure and function.

Type IV collagen is found in the basement membrane, a thin layer of tissue that supports the cells in the body.

Where is collagen derived from?

Collagen is derived from a variety of sources, including animal tissues, plants, and microbes. The most common sources of collagen for dietary supplements are animal tissues such as bovine (cow) hide, chicken or fish bones, and pigskin.

Who should take collagen?

As we age, our bodies naturally and gradually start to make less collagen. This results in the skin changing from a tightly packed, organized ‘network’ of fibres to an unorganized maze.

Excessive exposure to sunlight, smoking, alcohol consumption and lack of sleep and exercise can damage these collagen fibers, which leads to wrinkles forming.

It is thought that from the age of 25, your body's collagen levels deplete at a rate of 1.5% per annum. This means that by the age of 35 your body will have lost 15% and by 45, 30%. It is at this stage that you really start to notice a change in your skin's elasticity and texture.

Collagen supplementation is a simple, daily practice that aims to prevent this natural process.

Many people take collagen supplements to support healthy skin, hair, and nails, and to help with joint health. However, collagen supplements are not for everyone, and it is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any supplement regimen.

When is the best time to take collagen?

Collagen is best taken on an empty stomach as this will mean you will have less stomach acid to break down the active nutrients and proteins. Taking Collagen last thing at night is also a good time as your body can absorb and use the collagen at a time when it is actively repairing anyway - i.e., when you're asleep. However, these are just ideal scenarios and you do not need to take collagen on an empty stomach to obtain the benefits.

If these are not convenient times for you, just remember to consistency take your collagen supplement/s daily and over the long term to see the benefits.
